Did you know that farm fresh produce and products are as close as the corner store? One of The Brandywine Hundred’s most unassuming treasure’s is right under your nose. If you haven’t been to Highland Orchard’s you have probably passed it a thousand times. Do yourself a favor and pull over.

img_1525

Located on Foulk Rd just South of Silverside Rd, you have probably seen these signs on the side of the road. Next time you pass by go ahead and pull in up the long driveway and discover a cozy little market of farm fresh goods.

Founded by Clark Webster in 1832 the farm still remains in the family today. Three generations are currently still working and operating the grounds. Farm grown flowers line the outside of the barn leading you to the front door of the market. There you find tons of fresh fruit and produce. Jam’s and packaged goods line the outside wall inside the market and a cooler in the back is stocked with meats. Fresh cider and most importantly apple cider donuts can be found near the register.

In a time when everyone is throwing around the word organic. What better way to know where you are getting your fruits and vegetables then walking in and saying hello to the person who grew them.

Bellevue State Park

Bellevue State Park
800 Carr Rd, Wilmington, DE 19809

img_1491

Spring is here and everyone is looking to knock off the Winter chill and get outside. Luckily for us here in North Wilmington and The Brandywine Hundred, we have Bellevue State Park. Located off of Carr Rd between Marsh Rd and Silverside Rd. We have an incredible nature escape right in our back yard.

The lands which comprise the bulk of Bellevue State Park were originally the estate of a wealthy wool merchant, Hanson Robinson. In 1855, Robinson built a Gothic Revival castle as the centerpiece of his property and named it Woolton Hall.

The estate was acquired by shipping magnate C.R. Griggs after the death of Robinson. Griggs kept Woolton Hall intact, but built a carriage house in the 1870s to house his collection of antique carriages.

img_1509

In 1893, William Du Pont, Sr. purchased the estate. Du Pont built a number of buildings on the property, including barns and horse stables. Upon his death in 1928, the estate was inherited by his son, William du Pont, Jr. du Pont remodeled Woolton Hall so that it was a replica of Montpelier, the former residence of President James Madison which had also been du Pont’s boyhood home. The home was renamed Bellevue Hall.

Following du Pont’s death in 1965, The estate was purchased by the state of Delaware in 1976 and opened to the public as Bellevue State Park

Bellevue State Park offers 328 acres of leisure and enjoyment. Situated in the middle of the park is A 1-1/8 mile fitness track that circles a catch-and-release fishing pond stocked with bass, catfish, and sunfish. Bait and Tackle are available in the parking lot vending machine near the bathrooms. Relax at the pond and take in a day of fishing or enjoy the scenic backdrop while you get your workout in. There is also a near by exercise trail for those looking for a little more of a challenge or to double down on your efforts.

Action Hardware

Action Hardware
Branmar Plaza
1812 Marsh Rd #15
Wilmington DE, 19810
302.475.5811

I’m sure plenty of people have heard of or have been to Action Hardware. If not, you need to. Located on the Northwest corner of Marsh Rd and Silverside in the Branmar Plaza, (The same plaza as Acme.) Action Hardware is a small town feel hardware store with a lot to offer.

Have you ever walked into a big box hardware retailer and don’t know where to start? You know, the really big ones? You know who I mean. You walk around the store hoping to find help. Sometimes you find someone and start walking towards them and they start to walk away. Then you make a mad dash waving and flailing your arms. (excuse me!) Only to have them hurry away. Feels like they are running from you on purpose. Or worse yet, you find someone and ask them what you are looking for and they have no clue what you are talking about. Or they tell you to wait there and they will page someone. 20min later you feel like you’ve been forgotten about.

You will receive the exact opposite experience at Action Hardware. Action Hardware is a privately owned Mom & Pop hardware store that has been in business for 40yrs. When you enter the store you will be greeted by associates happy to see you and ready to help. I am always asked what I am working on today or what they can help me find. They then walk you to the item you desire and ask questions about what you are using it for. Filled with knowledge they are willing to make suggestions and comment on what it is that you are trying to do. I feel like they care about my project and about me getting it right the first time.

In this day and age it is hard to find great customer service anymore. Unless I’m helping you with all your Real Estate needs that is… Most places you go, you wind up running into someone who would much rather be doing something else. At Action Hardware you just might receive some of the best service you’ve ever had. It feels really good to walk into a store and be welcomed with kindness and to leave feeling appreciated. I think we all deserve this feeling when we shop. Which is why you owe it to yourself to shop at Action Hardware.

And if you are looking to Buy or Sell a Home, Give me a chance to give you the BEST Customer Experience you’ve ever had.

In my opinion the one thing missing in The Brandywine 100 was a legitimate sports bar. I mean yes there are plenty of small bars around that you can watch the games on 8-10 TV’S or so, but not a big place to get a great experience with great food and drink. Well folks, that has all just changed. As of this past Monday March 26th. The Green Turtle has officially opened on 202/Concord Pike in Restaurant Row and we are all in for quite a treat.

The Green Turtle has 49 TV’s throughout the bar with multiple booths having their own personal TV with remote. There isn’t a direction you can look and not be able to see the game that you are most interested in. They have 26 beers on tap with many more available in bottles and feature their “Shell Raiser” Draft beer. The staff was all very friendly, welcoming and quick to take your order. The Green Turtle’s menu features American Grill with burgers, wings, sandwiches and wraps. All the food you need for game day made fresh. Happy hour is from 3p-6p and 10p-close daily. Half price appetizers during happy hour. Bavarian pretzels, Nachos and Fried pickle spears just to name a few.

The Green Turtle also offers a few great deals for us locals. They have a rewards club card, free to sign up. Earn 1 point for every dollar spent and receive $5 off for every 100 points. You will also qualify for specials and discounts throughout the year. You can manage your account with the free Green Turtle app or with your club card that is given to you at the time of sign up.

There is also a Mug Club! It will cost you $40 to sign up and you get to chose your own personal mug number. That mug will hang their for you and only you to use whenever you are there. As a member you will receive $1 off every beer for life. You will also receive special Mug Club Member Discounts. Once a month on the last Thursday of the month there will be a Mug Club party. You are invited to come in and enjoy a spread of free food while you and your fellow Mug Club Members enjoy frosty beverages from your Mugs. (Beer must be paid for by you at these events.)

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

The Green Turtle has multiple programs giving back to our community. They have reserved Mug Club Mugs 1-15 that will be auctioned off 1 at a time over the next few years. All of the proceeds from these Mug sales will go to AI Dupont Children’s Hospital. (Thank you Green Turtle!) Also for the first 30 days $1 from all of their “Boardwalk Lemonade” sales will go to help fund the local youth soccer program.

If you ask me, the need for a sports bar the magnitude of The Green Turtle here in The Brandywine 100 was long over due. Head on over and grab yourself one of their popular T-Shirt’s and a beer. I look forward to seeing you there.
